Donner: Party of One
Circa 2007, I had a dream. A vision. A surge of creative inspiration hit me one night while I was sipping gin, surfing the web, thinking of cannibalism.
I would create a film. A cinematic masterpiece, based on a true story with a touch of poetic license.
I describe it all to my older brother in an online conversational exchange. [my handle: gmichaelfan].
I do not consider it a COMPLETELY one-sided chat session-- my brother really gets into it towards the end.
(If Roman Polanski or Martin Scorsese are reading this, which I'm 90% sure they are, please feel free to make this movie at your discretion. It's my gift to you.)
gmichaelfan: so we're writing a screenplay about the Donner party
gmichaelfan: ARE YOU IN
gmichaelfan: starring daniel day-lewis as the well-meaning leader, that ultimately leads them not to the promised land of california, but to destruction
gmichaelfan: no epic music
gmichaelfan: this is a story about humanity
gmichaelfan: the lengths we will go to to survive
gmichaelfan: just the natural sounds of the forest
gmichaelfan: man vs. nature; man vs. man
gmichaelfan: and, ultimately, man vs. self.
gmichaelfan: we're thinking ART HOUSE
gmichaelfan: a horror story of human nature
gmichaelfan: and no lingering on the fried people
gmichaelfan: just flashes of blood here and there
gmichaelfan: we're not going for cheap violence
gmichaelfan: the horror lies not in the heart roasting over the fire (TRUE STORY)...
gmichaelfan: and we have the whole framework
gmichaelfan: we have their diaries
gmichaelfan: well, they're online.. WE don't have the rights to them or anything
gmichaelfan: but COME ON!!!
gmichaelfan: how has this not been done?
gmichaelfan: we can form the best dialogue from their stories
gmichaelfan: and daniel day-lewis will have a look of terror in his eyes, from time to time, like he knows they are doomed
gmichaelfan: LOL are you there.
gmichaelfan: in the diaries, they described an 18 month old baby crying "MAMA" and hugging his mutilated mother's body
colind212: oh hi
See you at Cannes '14.
